Button Contest

Categories: Services

Hello fellow CSers,

We think it would be cool to create a button that would identify us as members of the Department of Computer Science and we want your creativity to come up with the design. What does Computer Science mean to you? We hope that the design is unique and would incorporate some aspect that would make sense in terms of technology, computer science, etc.

Submit your designs to nakisa AT cs DOT ubc DOT ca. It should include 'UBC Computer Science' or 'CS' somewhere on it, have no more than four colours, and be simple enough that the design is still visible when shrunken down to one inch.

Submit it by Thursday July 28th. Students will have the until August 11th to vote on their favourite design and the winning design may show up in places like on CS clothing, the agenda, the yearbook, etc. - so it better be good! Create a legend for yourself and prove that not only do CS students have brilliant logical minds, they are creative too!

Just for entering a design you will get one free 'beverage' at our first bzzr garden, which will be early in the school year. The winner will receive a $150 gift certificate to UBC bookstore.

Thanks and we hope everyone's having an awesome summer!

Clothing, food, and new office manager

Edit: For detailed clothing info, please see http://www.csss.cs.ubc.ca/clothing2005

Edit: Deadline has been extended to November 14th. (This is the last time, ;-) )

Clothing samples have now arrived in X139. So make sure you have the right size for your order, which is due Friday (not anymore, see the edit below). If you've submitted an order form already and want to double check (since they only arrived today), just come down and we can make changes if necessary. You can find more about our clothing sale at http://www.csss.cs.ubc.ca/node/126

Available colours:

Also, since the samples only arrived a few days ago, we have graciously extended the deadline for T-shirt orders to November 4th, 2005 at 2pm. Please submit them ASAP, as the sooner we get the orders in to our supplier, the sooner they will arrive!

We haven't really done an official announcement on this, but we now sell pop and chips for the low, low price of 50 cents. The initial reaction has been overwhelming and we're in talks with year representatives to arrange regular shipments of goodies to the Cube office.

The extra responsibilities that the CSSS has taken on this year, has made us realize that another executive position is merited. Thus, the grandiose title of "CSSS Office Manager" has now been bestowed upon Eugene Chan. Even since being sworn into office last week in a rather unofficial ceremony, he will be coordinating office affairs (that means more office hours for the CSSS) and is not above playing a few games of NHL 2003 every now and then on our ever-popular Xbox console.

After much effort and vote counting, we have a winner! Leading the pack with 17 amazing votes is design #6. Its graceful cubic lines evidently struck a note in the hearts of CPSC'ers everywhere and will be featured on whatever products we can come up with this year.

We applaud the designer of #6, Johnson Chuang, as well as the 71 people who took the time to vote. Kudos to the runner ups, #1 and #4. Remember, if you didn't make it this time around, there's always next year!

Tutoring Program

Categories: Services

Hi there, CPSC Students!

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a well rested break and are fully charged for Term 2.

Following the initial launch of the program last term, we would like to bring back the Tutoring Program—part of the UBC Computer Science Student Society's Volunteering Services. Whether you need some extra academic help as a tutee or want to strengthen your computer science knowledge as a tutor, this would be the perfect program to be a part of!

Students taking first year computer science courses (CPSC 111 and CPSC 121) will have the opportunity to be matched with more experienced computer science students who can help them with course material and other related questions for the term. If you are interested and would like to register, please complete the attached Tutee Registration form and email it to [email protected] with the subject line: Tutee Registration - Your Name.

For those students who have completed CPSC 111 and CPSC 121, you are strongly encouraged to apply to be a tutor! Becoming a tutor will not only refresh your computer science knowledge and improve your leadership skills but will also provide you with a better foundation should you be interested in applying to become a TA in the future. Tutoring helps to develop both interpersonal and communication skills, which are solid sought-after assets in the work field today. Please apply by completing the attached Tutor Application form and emailing it to [email protected] with the subject line: Tutor Application - Your Name.

For tutors, applications must be received promptly by midnight before January 18, 2010. We will then send you more information regarding your interview times and tutor-tutee matchups. We also encourage tutees to send us their application as early as possible, to help us match you with your tutor and maximize the amount of help you obtain.

The UBC CS Tutoring Program provides an excellent opportunity to meet other students in the CPSC Department and make new friends! We hope that everyone will seize this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you all!

Best regards,

Nan Jiang
